SUBJECT | American War Prisoners at Wake. |
1. Information received by American authorities indicates that in early October, 1943 approximately 100 American civilian workers held as prisoners on Wake Island were shot by the Japanese garrison forces. In order to assist in establishing the facts in connection with this incident, you are directed to take the following steps:
a. Defer the demobilization of, and examine in connection with this matter, such key personnel of the Wake Island garrison as are being repatriated in the Tachibana Maru, scheduled to arrive at Yokohama about 10 October. Notify this headquarters when and where these examinations are to take place in order that representatives of this headquarters can be present.
b. Take similar steps with Wake Island garrison personnel which may be repatriated in other vessels.
c. Take immediate steps to locate and examine in connection with this matter such former Wake Island garrison personnel as were evacuated from Wake Island on or about 4 July 1945 in the Takasago Maru, or any similar evacuations prior to the end of hostilities.
d. Submit at the earliest practicable date a report of the abovementioned investigations, including lists giving names, ranks, official status and present address of all Japanese personnel questioned in regard to the above.
2. In connection with the above , specific information is desired as to the disposition of the bodies, including the location of the burial ground if they were interred.
