I hereby promulgate the Law concerning the Computing of Age. Signed:HIROHITO, Seal of the Emperor This twenty-fourth day of the fifth month of the twenty-fourth year of Showa (May 24, 1949) Prime Minister YOSHIDA Shigeru Law No.96 Law concerning the Computing of Age As from the date of enforcement of this Law, it shall be obligatory upon a person to discard the old usage of counting his (or her) age by "Kazoe-doshi," and to compute it by the years (or the months as to the length less than one year) in accordance with the Law concerning the Computation of Age (Law No.50, 1902). As from the date of enforcement of this Law, both the national and local authorities are enjoined to compute a person's age in accordance with the provision of the preceding paragraph. However, in case it is necessary for some unavoidable resaon to do so by "Kazoe-doshi," they shall explicitly state this fact. Supplementary Provisions: This Law shall come into force as from January 1, 1950. The Government shall take a positive step so that the people may duly understand the purport of the Law and act in accordance with its provisions. The business connected with the preceding stipulation may be initiated prior to the date specified in paragraph 1 of the Supplementary Provisions.
